Spice up your night

These tempting treats will boost your mood – and appetite – for love.

By Amanda Keeley-Thurman

With foods like pasta, mashed potatoes and other comforting dishes filling our bodies during the cold winter months, sometimes it's hard to stay enthused about romance. So, it might be time to change the menu. Many foods are considered aphrodisiacs – they'll help you boost sexual stimulation and add a little spice to an otherwise dull night.

For starters, wine is an easy way to set the mood. A couple of glasses can help to relax and stimulate the senses. But be careful, because one glass too many can leave you drowsy.

For dinner, try serving up – or going out for – oysters, which are high in protein and said to bring out passion. Try feeding your lover asparagus to bring out his or her sensual side. The Vegetarian Society recommends eating asparagus for three days for best results.

Carrots are also thought be most stimulating to males. They are high in vitamins and beta-carotene, and were used by early Middle Eastern royalty to aid in the art of seduction. Garlic is also thought to stir up sexual desires – though you may need a breath mint.

Mustard is believed to stimulate the sexual glands and boost longing. Try eating a filet mignon with a mustard and peppercorn sauce.

Now on to dessert – fruit is a great place to start. Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamin B, which is essential for sex hormone production. Raspberries and strawberries, known as the fruit nipples, are not only loaded with vitamin C, but they are a great treat to feed your lover in front of some soft candlelight.

But if fruit's not your thing, then try some chocolate. Chocolate actually contains chemicals that effect neurotransmitters in the brain with its caffeine-like substance called theobromine. In other words, it makes you feel great. And vanilla's scent can stimulate the senses, while the taste increases lust.

Coffee, because of its caffeine, can be a great start for an all-nighter. But just like wine, it's better served in small doses, because too much caffeine can act as a depressant.

So, if you’re ready to spice up your night, these foods are for you. But food can only take you so far. Ambiance is key; you don’t want to be feeding your lover berries while he or she stares at a pile of dirty laundry.
