El Campeon

This taquería brings authentic south-of-the-border flavor to San Juan Capistrano.

By Adam Pringle
June, 2009

In an area like South Orange County, where truly authentic Mexican food (or any other kind of food, for that matter) is nearly impossible to find, El Campeon’s presence is something to appreciate. Located in the heart of San Juan Capistrano (it’s a mere two blocks away from the Mission), El Campeon is a taquería that serves harder-to-find favorites such as sopes, huaraches and pozole, along with the usual suspects such as burritos and tortas.

If you’re entering El Campeon for the first time, the menu may seem intimidating due to its size (not to mention that it’s entirely in Spanish), so I’ll make it simple for you: Go for the tacos. And these aren’t snack-size morsels (read: taco-truck portions), either – for only $1.98 each, they’re stuffed with all the quality meat you can handle. Order two or three of these beauties begging to be bathed in El Campeon’s rich red sauce, and you’ve got yourself a filling meal.

El Campeon is also a carnicería that serves many types of meats by the pound, so you can get tacos filled with the authentic likes of cueritos, cabeza and buche. If you’re looking for something more familiar, the carnitas and al pastor tacos are tasty, but the tender and flavorful birria (a stew made with goat meat – it’s actually fairly similar to a pot roast) taco is a must-try.
