When I drove by Eat Chow in Costa Mesa for the first time, I thought it was another upscale dog-grooming salon, but after taking a closer look, I noticed it was a café inside a clothing store. The eatery is a small rectangular section in the back corner of The Closet, a retail shop with more than just apparel – there’s a sign next to Eat Chow informing readers of a hair salon opening soon in the boutique, as well. The first thing you'll notice when you walk in is an attached room filled with clothing and other offerings. My dining partner and I surveyed the surroundings for a few minutes before seating ourselves in the restaurant. After we sat down, our busy server Zach stopped by to let us know he’d be back in a minute. He was the only server on with about 15 people in the place. While sitting in the café, you can hear house music coming from the apparel section; unfortunately, it clashed with the atmosphere of Eat Chow. I felt conflicted with the urge to buy shoes, dance on my table or order a sandwich. The task of lunch almost felt overwhelming. When Zach came back around after chasing from table to table, he asked for our drink orders and we started off with an appetizer, Fried Green Tomatoes with chili herb aioli. And despite the wait, my first bite was delicious, making up for the mish-mashed surroundings. The tomatoes are topped with a chipotle sauce, salsa fresca and queso fresco. I was happy with the $4 treat and would order it again – even though the tomatoes weren't as green as I'd anticipated. Another redeeming quality of the place? Zach was apologetic and sincere every time he came to check on us. Drinks were refilled in a timely manner, and things started rolling smoothly after appetizers.
