Right off the traffic circle in Orange, past a handful of antique stores, sits Mustard Café, a New York-style deli perfectly at home on a street where people hunt up and down for treasures.
Inside this airy eatery is a bakery, deli and sandwich shop rolled into one enjoyable dining experience. My sweet tooth urged me to make a meal out of lemon bars and saucer-sized cookies temptingly arranged in the display case. But my guest and I opted for the salads and sandwiches instead.
We couldn’t decide whether to make our own sandwich, mixing and matching tasty mustards, fresh breads, cheeses and premium Boar’s Head meats, or try the signature sandwiches and paninis off the menu.
I settled on the Grilled-Chicken Pesto Panini - a café favorite – and the mixed berry salad for which I would gladly drive 10 miles to savor again; my guest enjoyed the Cracked-Pepper Turkey Melt on challah bread. The generous-sized sandwiches are served in the bottom half of a to-go container making it easy to pack up your unfinished meal.
Wine and beer are available, along with waters, teas, sodas, juices and coffee drinks. And I must confess, I topped it off with creamy white coconut cake from that irresistible bakery.
